Lagelu Local Government

The Lagelu Local Government with areas of 416 square kilometers was created in 1976, with headquarters at Iyana Offa. It was part of the Ibadan East District council created in 1961. The Local Government consists of over 1076 towns and villages including the principal towns of lalupon, Lagun, Monatan, Ofa, Ejioku, Oyedeji, Kelebe, Sagbe, Elegbaada, Olowode, Wofun, Ogburo, Kutayi, Apatere, Olorunda, Ogunjawa, Ile-Igbon, Iyana Church, Odo Oba,  Sukuru and Akinsawe. In January 2017 two (2) Local Council Development Area were carved out of Lagelu Local Government namely: Lagelu West LCDA with her headquarters at Olorunda Abaa and Lagelu North LCDA at Oyedeji.

  • To engage the youths productively and to inculcate patriotism, team spirit, etc in youths through sporting festival and social activities.

Ward Structure

Lagelu Local Government consisted of 14 political wards before Local Council Development Areas were created, presently; it has 5 wards in existence. These are: Ejioku (4), Lalupon (7), Lalupon (8), Lalupon (9) and Offa (10).

Occupations

The main occupation of the people in the Local Government areas is farming including large production of palm oil and black soap; thus traditional palm oil and soap making industries are thriving in the Local Government Area. There are two viable projects to boost the standard of living of the inhabitants of the local government. These are Eniosa Better Lift Fish Pond as well as Eniosa Agricultural Projects.

Housing

The quality of shelter in the Local Government areas may be classified into three types which may directly with population density. The highly dense core areas generally have poor quality houses, while the housing quality in the moderately dense newly developed areas is relatively good. The low density areas which are also newly developed also have the best housing structures in area.

Industry and Commerce

The local government area is blessed with 19 private hospitals, 48 private nursery and primary schools, 13 private secondary schools, and 9 petrol stations.

Culture and Tourism

Nature has blessed Lagelu Local Government area with a lot of potentials for tourism.

Agriculture

The local farmers produce yam, millet (grains) among other things. In an order to supplement the farmers’ effort an d boost agricultural production, for the feeding of the teeming population in the area, the council through the Family Support Programme established an integrated Eniosa Agricultural Project and Eniosa Better Life Fish pond.

Road and Transportation Network

Lagelu Local Government area has 48 urban and rural roads both tarred and un-tarred that link the major settlements.

Water Supply

The Local Government had put in place some numbers of infrastructures for the well being of its citizens. It has sunk over 50 deep wells and several boreholes, to ease the acute shortage of water.

Health Facilities

The Local Government has 19 health centres to take care of its citizens. In addition to the provision of these health centres, it ensures a healthy living for its people by participating in all the National Immunization Programmes. The Local Government established quality maternity centres and family planning programmes to enhance its child health care delivery and family planning programme throughout the area. It also conducts house-house sanitary inspection to all nooks and crannies of the area to ensure a healthy living of the populace.

Educational Facilities

The Local Government has 48 primary schools and 8 secondary schools. There is also a special unit in one of the schools for the handicapped pupils.

The Local Government consists of eight (8) departments which are:

The Local Government operates presently in line with the laid down “scheme of service”. The chairman is the over-all head and next to him is the Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA), followed by the Director of Administration and General Services (DAGS) and other Departmental heads being assisted by their Deputies for smooth running of day to day activities. Also, there are various units under the headship of each unit heads.

Moreover, the Local Government acts on the instructions and official directives of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters and Oyo State Local Government Service Commission.

Lagelu Local Government operates under the staff strength of about 323 before Local Council Development Areas were carved out, but now runs with about 121 numbers of staff.
