Egbeda Local Government

Egbeda Local Government was carved out of Lagelu Local Government in 1989 with the administrative headquarters at Egbeda. The Local Government Area share boundaries with Osun State to the East, Lagelu Local Government to the North, Ibadan North East Local Government to the West and Ona Ara Local Government to the South.

Egbeda Local Government was carved out of Lagelu Local Government in 1989 with the administrative headquarters at Egbeda.  The Local Government Area share boundaries with Osun State to the East, Lagelu Local Government to the North, Ibadan North East Local Government to the West and Ona Ara Local Government to the South.

Egbeda Local Government is dominated by the Yoruba’s with a sizeable expanse of Land for the production of livestock and arable crops.  Politically, the Local Government is in the front-line in Oyo State.  The people of the Local Government are progressives who cherish truth and admonish uprightness.  The political administration has raised the Local Government to its social and economic peaks, including the citing of a dry seaport at Erunmu by the Federal Government.

Egbeda Local Government Area offers a most conducive atmosphere for both industrial and residential development.  Since inception, new roads had been built and some of the existing ones have been maintained and indeed to meet standard.

Egbeda Local Government, because of its strategic location has grown rapidly economically and politically. This development led to the carving out of a new Local Council Development Area named Ajorosun Local Council Development Area, as approved by His Excellency, Senator Isiaq Abiola Ajimobi led administration in his repositioning, transforming and rebuilding agenda.

The Local Government Area covers almost 420 square kilometres with a relatively undulating topography of about 235 metres above sea level. Egbeda Local Government is a suburb of Ibadan Metropolis.  There are about 195 settlements in the Local Government area while over 60% of these settlements are rural in nature with a land mass of about 420 square kilometers.

In terms of distribution, the central part of the Local Government Area contains nearly 50% of all the settlements among which is the council Headquarters, Egbeda.

Egbeda Local Government has 4 wards.  Major Town includes Egbeda, Osegere, Awaye, Alakia, Adegbayi, Olubadan, Oremeji, Gbaremu, Ogungbade.

The indigenes and residents of Egbeda are predominatly Yorubas while there are also other tribes like the Hausas, Ibos, Fulanis, Urhobos, Itsekiris in minority.

Majority of the citizens and resident in the Local Government Area are predominantly farmers, public & Civil servants and artisans.  The main sources of income of the people are from agriculture, monthly wages and service charges earnings from sale of farm produce.

In Egbeda Local Government Area: there are markets that operate on daily basis; they are Bola –Ige International Market, New Gbagi, Temidire plank market, Fashade plank market, Alaakia-Adegbayi Market, Idi-Iroko Market.  Other markets which include Egbeda are operated every five days

Egbeda Local Government has a large expanse of land which is very fertile for agriculture.  However, majority of the people practice more of subsistence farming than commercial farming.   a lot of people apart from their main occupation are also into farming to produce food to supplement their meager income. Those that are into commercial farming venture are into it as a means of livelihood.

The Local Government Education Authority was established in November, 1991 through decrees 3.  The Local Government Education Authority is now called Universal Basic Education Authority (UBEC). It comprises of both teaching and non-teaching Staff with Seventy-Six (36) public primary schools with the population of 40,336 pupils and about 25 public secondary schools within the Local Government Area. There also large number of private primary and secondary schools.

Primary Health Care Centres are located throughout the Local Government Area, the existing health centres posts and maternity centres are operating under the control of the Local Government Administration, and the centres are located in the following areas; Oloya, Wakajaiye, Adogba, Apete, Egbeda, Osegere,  Alakia-Isebo,  Olode, Ogungbade,  Oremeji, Tuberculosis (TBL) centre, SDP, Awaye. There are private hospitals, located at the urban and rural parts of the Local Government Area.

The main cultural festivals are those being celebrated in Ibadan land.  The Traditional council in the Local Government are Twelve (12) in number headed by the Chairman Traditional Council who is appointed by the Olubadan of Ibadan and besides the traditional council members; there are Seventy Eight (78) other Baales within the council area headed by the Chairman either selected/appointed among themselves.

The major festival in Egbeda are:

  • Damonroko Masqurade
  • Oyii Masqurade
  • Paramon Masqurade
  • Owolewa Masqurade

The major sporting activity in Egbeda Local Government is football.  The Local Government always participate in the yearly central council of Ibadan Indigenes competition, ALGON Youth Football competitions, Governor Competition, Governor Football Competition, Female Competition the Wife of His Excellency.
